Starfinder Hype - Andrew Roberts - 08-03-2017 Hey, I just got my subscriber copy, which has nothing to do with my VO NDA, so it's fair game for me to answer things. I've made it through weapons, armor, races, skills, classes, feats, themes, and character creation so far. I will continue but the progress will probably be slow. Be excited. This very much feels like Pathfinder with some really good tweeks. Honestly it feels very much like a hardcover expansion to Pathfinder. A lot like Pathfinder Unchained in space and in the future. I also have a work-in-progress thread post of changes between the two systems. I will probably post this next week when I'm back in Georgia for the sections I've gotten to so far, but the computer I'm on doesn't have Word so my formatting is bonkers right now. Does the granularity of skill definition match the skill points assigned per class? e.g. Are sociology and psychology a skill? How about classical mechanics and geology? Molecular biochemistry and trauma medicine? 2. How comprehensive is planet/solar system generation? Allow me to enumerate just the physical characteristics in the random planet generation in Traveller: A. Number of parent stars B. Orbital Period C. Planet Size D. Atmospheric Composition E. Nominal Climate F. Percent Ocean/Land G. Valuable Natural Resources H. Biodiversity Historical Stage RE: Starfinder Hype - Andrew Roberts - 08-04-2017 It's physical science, life science, engineering, culture, and mysticism for knowledge skills. Life science, mysticism, and engineering are the monster knowledges. It's possible to have specialities (like the Scholar theme gives you a choice within life science or physical science), but those are usually presented as conditional bonuses than full out skills. There are less skills in Starfinder actually, and everyone's at least 4+Int. Operatives are the undisputed masters of the skill check. They get straight up bonuses to ALL skills based on, 8+Int, and an extra 2 full ranks in two of their specialization, so essentially they get 10+Int. They also get skill focus on the two specialist skills they get at level 1. They can also use some of those skills in combat with various talents and class abilities. BUT, again, everyone is at least 4+Int so no one will be bad at them. Mechanics are good at the mechanic themed skills too (like Computers and Engineering). Honestly all the classes are cool and it looks like they learned their lesson skill-wise with fighters, clerics, and paladins in Pathfinder. Another good example of skill combining... Survival now covers Handle Animal, Ride, and of course Survival. As for planet building... I'm working on getting there. RE: Starfinder Hype - liamfisher - 08-06-2017 Well, space operas tend to be more skill heavy. You have to be able to do things without killing yourself or others. RE: Starfinder Hype - cygnus - 08-06-2017 I also got my pdf already and I am reading through it a little slower than you. Since I am newer to pathfinder and had many rule books to learn, it's been overwhelming to keep up with more experienced players. I'm pretty excited about the ability to be on the leading edge of understanding a system. Nevertheless, it still involves keeping up with lots of variables and rules that apply so you can still see the need for hero lab. I'll be curious about the success of a starfinder society effort in the area. I play out of a Fayetteville gaming store and have limited availability though. RE: Starfinder Hype - TheMaskedFerret - 08-08-2017 Only 9 more days before I can purchase the PDF.... |
